The main character is Johan Gustav Dåådh (Peter Eggers) a former army physician from the Russo-Swedish War (1788–1790), now criminal inspector in Stockholm. He is inspired by the French revolution and the new ideas of his time. He is an atheist, a strong supporter of Republicanism and has embraced Voltaire’s freethought philosophy. He has also fallen in love with his superior officer Walhstedt’s wife Magdalena. Dåådh and Magdalena both share the same world view and this brings them into a romantic relationship. Dåådh struggles with changing the current world while influencing his revolutionary friends to refrain from violence and an armed struggle. Inspector Dåådh’s assistant is Simon Freund, portrayed by Joel Spira. Simon Freund is in many ways Inspector Dåådh’s opposite, being a more conservative man with a strong faith in God, though he does have a bad habit of drinking.

Episode Nine
Daadh is invited up to Uppsala by his old professor, who needs his help to find out who poisoned one of his students. Daadh involves himself in the case and quickly realises that his own life is in danger. Someone clearly doesn’t like him snooping around. Meanwhile, subversive events take place at the home of chief constable back in Stockholm that will affect Daadh’s future. And furthermore, his old enemy Marta Raxelius has decided to put her planned revenge into action but rather than striking at Daadh, the blow lands on someone else altogether.
