Set in the Hebridean island of Lewis, off the north-west coast of Scotland, Machair was based around a fictional further educational college called Bradan Mor which specialised in business and media studies.
The majority of the filming was set outside to get as much of the background location in as possible.
Machair is the Gaelic word for describing an extensive low-lying fertile plain.
A total of 155 episodes in the 4:3 aspect ratio – 25 minutes in length, were made and shown on Scottish and Grampian Television (ITV) from 1993 through to 1998. Three seasons have been repeated on BBC Alba. 39 episodes from the first three seasons will be posted in groups of three while the remaining seasons are being broadcast at a rate of two every fortnight.
