When I first posted this I prefaced it with the following comment – ‘An outrageous piece of self-indulgence on my part. If you know it you will probably understand. If not, probably best left alone.’ This is still true but it is going to feature in a BBC4 documentary tonight which might raise interest in it again. Just proves how long I have been a fan of ‘foreign’ TV.

A brave prince wants to win the heart of a stubborn princess by finding the singing, ringing tree for her. He finally locates it in the magical realm of an evil dwarf who offers him a deal: he can keep the tree if it starts singing before sundown – which it will only do if the princess truly loves him. Otherwise, he will be turned into a bear.

  1. The documentary mentioned is – The Golden Age Of Children’s TV and is scheduled for 9 p.m. on BBC4 tonight.

The BBC showed this film in a serialised narrated version many times over the years. Along with the Robinson Crusoe serial starring Robert Hoffman (which I also have) this is one of the most ‘fondly’ remembered series of the age.

The subtitles in that version are hard coded.

  2. Thankyou. Another classic from my childhood. There were never many foreign films or tv programmes for children on the Beeb (wasn’t there a Hungarian ‘the flashing blade’ or something?), but I remember watching this quite a few times. I also thought it was Russian, nice to learn something new. And yes, the Crusoe series was a gem.

    1. There were probably more than you remember, mostly under the ‘Tales From Europe’ banner. The Flashing Blade was French and was a bit later than the others. It is mostly remembered for the English version of the theme song. I have some of the series on DVD somewhere.

Search for Tales From Europe and look for the ‘thewhitehorses Angelfire’ link.

      1. I just checked I have Volume 2 of The Flashing Blade only which is episodes 7 – 13. They first went out on the BBC in May/June 1969. Tales From Europe had effectively finished by that point, although a couple more tales were shown under a different banner.

        1. The dangerous thing about this forum, you find something that will spur you into a search for more, and so the collection grows. Just as well we have talented contributors who can point us in the right direction. Ok, will also catch the bbc documentary to refire more memories. Thanks again

  3. ha! Thank you, I remember catching one or two bits of this but never saw the whole thing – I will do so now. 🙂
